Though Scotty retains most of the essential personality traits as her male counterpart, there are several distinct differences; as a woman in a male-dominated field, she feels that she has to push herself above and beyond what is expected of her in order to prove that she is more than capable of doing her job. She places a lot of pressure on herself, because as an engineer and most especially as a commanding officer, mistakes can easily turn deadly.
As a young child and teen, she was often pressured by her mother to seek a career other than engineering, and pressured to find someone to marry and settle down with; the minute she was old enough, Scotty enrolled in Starfleet and got the hell off the planet. Her relationship with her mother since then has been tenuous at best.
Friendly and out-going and always ready with a joke, she has no trouble making friends, but romantic relationships are a different matter altogether. During her years as a student, she would on occasion go out with friends, but she always claimed she didn't have room in her life for a relationship. Once in Starfleet, she rose through the ranks quickly, and was beginning to grow comfortable with her position when the unthinkable happened. She made a mistake.
It all started as a debate on relativistic physics and how it pertained to subspace travel. It resulted in the loss of Admiral Archer's prize beagle and her subsequent punishment: being assigned to a Federation outpost on Delta Vega. Certain that her career was effectively over, Scotty resigned herself to a lifetime of being "that crazy engineer that lost that dog" and tried not to let herself dwell on it - but there wasn't much else to do on a Federation outpost in the middle of nowhere.
One chance encounter with Spock Prime and James T. Kirk later, she was rescued from exile by means of assignation to the USS Enterprise, where she is currently stationed.
